Oakland Bay Bridge
The old Bay Bridge was still in the process of demolition when I took this. I am glad I have the picture. When I was a child, my uncle would explain the engineering of the bridge to me, a cantilever bridge on the Oakland side in contrast with the suspension bridge on the SF side. I was impressed by the strength of the cantilevers during demolition, extending out into nothing from the central column while they cut the bridge apart in pieces for recycling. I was reminded that the engineering is not only to allow the bridge to stand when it is completed, but so that it can stand while they are building it.
